Sweet Child O’ Mine
A 30-Day Music Memory Series

I never really learned to do “mom” sorts of stuff like how I imagine normal moms do… stuff. One example is lullabies. I don’t recall my mom singing lullabies to me, nor do I recall ever learning the words to any of the ones you always see television and movie moms singing to their newborn infants. Rockin’ the bye-babies and mockingbirds just never made their way into my repertoire. So, when I had kids, I just sang songs I knew.
One song I designated “lullaby” for my blonde-haired, blue-eyed girls when they were babies was Sweet Child O’ Mine, by Guns N’ Roses. The lyrics work as well from a lover-to-lover perspective as they do from a parent-to-child perspective.
Eventually, my girls grew old enough to learn the lyrics and sing with me.
We even started an in-car singing group we call “The Cargoyles.”
And now, if they’re feeling tribute-esque, they can play this song on stage in front of people.

I don’t know if it’s what you sing so much as that you sing to kids when they’re little, but I like to think that this song will become an important memory for both of them when they get nostalgic about music.
Did your parents sing to (or with) you as a child? Do any songs stand out?
