Some of Ken’s Nintendo cartridges (I can claim co-ownership, right? Because marriage.)

The Super Mario Brothers Overworld Theme–Just as the game’s challenging levels, hidden secrets, and memorable characters kept us all coming back for more — the music was an essential part of the gameplay experience.

My love for games started with Atari, but it changed my life when Nintendo came out. Like many kids in the 90s, playing Super Mario Brothers was a formative experience. I kept my childhood Atari 2600 with all the cartridges and married a guy who still has his childhood NES with cartridges. True love.

It had easily been 25 years since I played these games, yet when we popped Super Mario Brothers into Ken’s old NES system and started playing, it was all still there. I knew exactly what to do. It was just like being a kid again, sitting in front of the television, close enough that the controller cords didn’t pull the NES off the shelf under the TV. I must have logged a lot of hours playing this game. I knew I played A LOT but never really thought about how many until replaying it as an adult.

I have yet to see the Super Mario Bros movie that just came out, but I’m on it as soon as it’s streaming.

If you play games, do you have a favorite game music?
