Midnight Moses

A 30-Day Music Memory Series

Funny, the places a song will take you.

I’m back in the metal sculpture room at UNLV, 1997–98. It’s late at night, or ‘wee-hours-of-the-morning’ early. I’m the only one there working through the night because that’s when it’s quiet, and I can get my stuff done without having to take turns with other students on limited equipment availability.

I love the plasma cutter and invent reasons to use it for my projects. One particular project was this mega 6' tall “ball” I welded together out of rusty old scrap metal that’d been abandoned and weathered for who knows how long out in the metal shop yard. The ball had a 4' entrance point, and the interior was 100% covered in pink egg-crate mattress bits I’d hot-glued in, along with occasionally-placed plastic yellow daisies. I could almost stand up straight inside; it was a comfy and nearly soundproof place to lie down. It was a really neat little cocoon of sorts.

Blasting in the background at the monumental completion of this massive project, seeing me through to daylight, the perfect late-night theme song: “Midnight Moses” by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

Is there a song that takes you back in time? What’s the song? Where do you go?
